1. What can I expect at the first visit?
We ask that you come in 10 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment time to complete any paperwork necessary to conduct the evaluation. After meeting with the Physical Therapist and discussing your specific problem and goals for therapy, a comprehensive examination/evaluation is performed to determine the source of the pain. Your therapist will discuss the problem and determine your course of treatment. Also, you can expect a home exercise program at the onset of care as our mission is to empower our clients with the ability to manage their condition independently.
2. What do I bring to the first visit?
Please bring a photo ID, health insurance card (if using insurance), and New Client paperwork (downloaded from this website), and wear shorts/loose fitting clothing for comfort. Typically, we will have received a faxed referral prior to your first appointment, if you should have a copy please bring it in as a back up.
3. What should I wear?
Wear or bring something comfortable like shorts or pants with an elastic waistband. Women should wear or bring a tank top or sports top in order to expose the area involved. For your convenience, you may change clothing at the clinic.

The initial evaluation will take approximately 60 minutes and each subsequent appointment will be from 45 - 90 minutes, depending on your condition.
5. Will my insurance cover the cost?
In most cases, Physical Therapy is a covered benefit. For more details on your policy, please contact your insurance company. Prior to your first appointment, we will contact your insurance carrier for Prior Approval, if necessary, as well as verify coverage. We accept all major medical insurance plans, to include Blue Shield, Tricare, Tricare For Life and Medicare. Deductables and estimated co-payments are collected at the time services are rendered. For your convenience, payments can be made by cash, check or credit card. Please contact us to discuss the fee schedule or any other financial concerns.
6. If I don’t have insurance, can I still be treated?
Yes, most definitely. A referral is no longer required by the State of Hawaii to see a physical therapist.
7. Do I need to see my physician before starting Physical Therapy?
No. It is important to understand that all insurance companies, to include Medicare and Medicaid, do require a referral from a licensed physician prior to being seen by a licensed physical therapist. If you don't have a doctor, we can recommend one based on your condition and/or diagnosis.
8. What are your hours of operation?
We are currently open Monday - Friday from 8AM to 6PM. Please call us for an appointment.
9. Can I still come to Ohana Sports Medicine if my physician referred me to another clinic?
Yes you can, in most circumstances. Please call our office, 808.335.5808, and we can answer any questions that you may have. Please keep in mind that your physician will receive a treatment plan and up-to-date status reports throughout your treatment. We feel that communication is vital in your road to recovery.
10. How often do I need to attend Physical Therapy?
This will depend on a variety of factors, to include what your physician and Physical Therapist recommends, as well as the the severity/intensity of the injury. At the conclusion of the evaluation, your therapist will discuss and review your Plan of Care (POC), which includes how often you should be seen on a weekly basis. Typically it is 2 - 3 times a week. In addition, a Home Exercise Program is recommended and will directly affect how quickly you will recover. Our goal at Ohana Sports Medicine is to empower you with the tools necessary to manage your condition independently as soon as possible.
